The underlying principle of his art moved focus from competition and fighting to development of character and mental strength. The overall principles are named as humility, honesty, gentleness, perseverance, self-control and the overall development of an unbreakable spirit.

Classes are taught in a family-orientated atmosphere and the level of intensity is usually not as high as that found in other martial arts. However, practitioners are encouraged to train over a long period of time and this is different to other martial arts because traditionally martial arts came from a background in military and the principle which was most important was the ability to train troops quickly so that they could return from battle victorious as opposed to training over a longer period of time with overall health and well-being as the main focus.

The problems that Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi attempted to solve in the creation of his system were those associated with training people intensively in a short period of time which can lead to injury. Hence his focus on the gradual attainment of skill over an extended period of time which should not be at the expense of damage to the muscular, skeletal structure of the body.
